Hail! Hornet! Is pretty much the Sludge equivalent of a supergroup, and a huge one too. True, lots of bands in the scene are made by musicians who play in multiple acts but, honestly, when T-Roy Medlin from Sourvein, “Dixie” Dave Collins from Weedeater, Vince Burke from Beaten Back to Pure and Erik Larson from Alabama Thunder Pussy decide to get together to play, its natural to get excited. Their début was fine, although closer to a fun time for all the musicians involved than an actual full hit. Then, the project went into hiding. But, thanks to the gods of the filthy riff and fuel soaked vocals, they decided to deliver once again. And, wrapped into a badass artwork by the always great Brian Mercer, they hit home with an album that's not only way superior to the début, but also one of the best pieces of pure, demonic NOLA sludge of the year, along with the new Sourvein release.
The album opens with a “take no prisoner” approach. “Shoot The Pigs” is a fast, merciless, throat slitting dose of visceral riffs, bestial vocals and wild drumming (almost close to the first days of High On Fire). “Gifted Horse” doesnt slow down, with Erik delivering some insane double-bass work. Up to this point, you almost feel like the band is playing some blackened thrash take on Sludge, gutting the listener with neck breaking speed. At this point, though, everything slows down. And the filth level raises. The title track's slow, sulphurous crawl is a pleaser. Pure Eyehatgod/Crowbar/Sourvein styled destruction. T-Roy's voice has to be heard to be believed: a gutsy, abrasive howl that seem to come from the deep, filth encrusted bottom of a pit. Terrifying. Even more when at some points, “Dixie” gives a hand with his acid grunts. The rest of the album keeps the intensity to maximum, whether it's with the thrashiness of “Beast of Bourbon” and Sucide Belt” or the final, sticky, suffocating, descent into the sludge abyss of “Blacked Out in Broad Daylight”. This is how pure Sludge is played: relentless, vicious, nihilistic, brutal, unnerving, primordial and angry. Expect nothing less from Sludge gods....
